For thousands of years the area has been home to aboriginal groups with mainly Kwini, Cambra, Kulari and Walmbi lineage, it has also inhabited by Benedictine Missionaries for more than a century. Today the community has a population of more than 400 and is serviced by an office, stores, fuel supply, clinic, school and of course the immaculate mission buildings. .
Located on the banks of the King Edward River, Kalumburu Community is 550km NW of Kununurra and 645km North of Derby. Accessible by barge, aircraft or using the seasonal, gravel, Gibb River & Kalumburu Roads the area is home to Honeymoon Beach, Pago Pago, McGowans Island and further south is the mighty Mitchell Plateau and its beautiful waterfalls, Drysdale River National Park, Cockburn Range, Pentecost and Durack Rivers.
The area offers rugged scenery, rock-art, WW2 bombing relics, exceptional fishing, breathtaking sunsets, unique coastline, cultural tours, mission tours and camping facilities – entry permits can be obtained by calling us on 08.91614575 or phoning the Kalumburu Community Office (08) 9161 4300 or faxing a request to (08) 9161 4331 on weekdays, 8.30 am-12 pm.
The area is a fishermans paradise with Bream & Barra being a major catch from the King Edward – (unfortunately barramundi like the warm waters and are best caught during the warmer wet season when access is restricted). The areas unique coastline provides some of the best year round, reef fishing (charters available) with good catches of Coral Trout, Golden Trevally, Queenies, Spanish Mackeral and Cod being caught year round. You can learn to catch live bait or buy it from the store. Ensure that your rigs and lines are heavy (100lb +) or be prepared to lose a few. Kalumburu Mission has camping and motel accommodation available, the community store offers a one stop shop for all your grocery and camping needs and the service station will look after your motoring needs. This area of the Kimberly offers memorable attractions and experiences.
